5 things to know about ICD-10 for acupuncturists
1) ICD-10 replaces ICD-9
On October 1st 2015 you must use ICD-10 codes. That means the last day to use our old friends like 847.0 or 719.46 will be September 30th 2015. The new codes you will use are International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10). These new ICD-10 codes will use three to seven characters in an alpha-numeric combination. It is not just the code number that will change for ICD-10, there will also be about five times as many ICD-10 codes as there are ICD-9 codes. Basically ICD-10 will be much more specific in coding diagnosis.
2) ICD-10 will not replace CPT codes
ICD-10 codes are for diagnosis, CPT codes are strictly for billing. Although both go on a claim the ICD-10 shift is not going to affect CPT. For more info check out the Department of Health and Human services ICD-10 Myths and facts sheet.
