Dealing with Medicare
Unfortunately, Medicare and Medicaid do not cover acupuncture or any services provided by an acupuncturist. However, there are some patients that have two insurance policies. One being Medicare, which is their primary, and another as their secondary insurance. If a patient has Medicare as their primary they must first obtain a denial from Medicare so that the secondary can be billed. In most cases their secondary is a supplemental plan that follows Medicare guidelines, which means, if Medicare denies, so do they. The key here is to find a policy in lieu of Medicare benefits that has acupuncture coverage. Once you find a patient with this type of scenario, and after receiving a Medicare denial, you can then bill the secondary for reimbursement.
